If you are looking for playroom ideas to keep your kids entertained for hours, but have limited space, you came to the right place! I made over a small corner of my home into a playroom corner and it has been a huge hit for my toddler. The playroom design has kept him so engaged that he independently goes to his playroom corner and plays for an hour or more each day (read here how I increased independent play with my toddler).

I wanted this area to be functional for my one-year-old, but still be beautiful. There are a few key things that helped with that:

Choose the Right Furniture

Little bodies need little furniture for easy play access! Opt for furniture items that are kid-sized and easily reachable. For my space, I chose a short toy shelf (I have this affordable one from Walmart and turned it on its side) and a toddler-sized bookshelf sling. I recommend starting with those two items, but if you have more space you could also add a play couch, toy kitchen, or a sensory/art table.

Limit the Number of Toys

Too many toys can feel overwhelming in a small space. Not to mention, too many toys can be overwhelming for your toddler or small child. I have found that 6-8 toys and some books are perfect for my one-year-old, but you may choose to do up to 12 if you have older kids. If you have more toys than that, I recommend implementing a toy rotation. Less toys will often keep kids engaged for longer. Plus toys seem exciting and brand new after being rotated out for awhile.

Display the selected toys on shelves that are easy to see and reach. I like to have one toy per cubby if you have shelf dividers/cubbies. This also makes the toys super easy to reset and put away.

Add 1-2 Decor Items

To finish off your small playroom, add 1-2 decor items to add interest and color. I chose a colorful ABC rug, but if I had more wall space I would have loved to add a playroom sign or even a wall-mounted toy car holder!

Keeping it simple is key when you are working with a small area!

That’s it! A few simple items and keeping a minimal number of toys can transform any space into a playroom that will entertain for hours!
